Several players will be the subject of fitness queries after a number of knocks sustained in our past two outings against Newcastle and Arsenal. Tammy Abraham’s ankle injury may perhaps be the most pressing of those after the England striker hobbled off the field at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Lampard is sure to be asked about our number nine’s availability for the cup tie, as well as the latest on Christian Pulisic and Reece James.

Building momentum and defensive strength

The Blues have not won more than two in a row since before Halloween and Lampard has spoken frequently about the need to find consistency in performances and results if our objectives are to be achieved come the end of the season.

Our promising back-to-back clean sheets against Forest and Burnley were swiftly undermined by a last-minute concession at Newcastle and sacrificing the lead twice against Arsenal, so the boss is likely to be questioned on his side’s recent defensive displays.

That goal

A trip to Hull brings back memories of a special Lampard goal scored at the KCOM in October 2008. It was our first-ever top-flight visit to the city and our number eight marked the occasion by opening the scoring after just three minutes with a beautiful left-footed chip from the edge of the box that sailed over the head of Boaz Myhill and into the far corner.

Over 11 years on, Frank may well be asked on where that strike ranks among his all-time favourites.

Latest Chelsea team news

After making nine changes for our victory over Nottingham Forest in the last round, Lampard will certainly be tempted to shuffle his pack again as we prepare for our ninth game in the past five weeks.

Pulisic will likely remain sidelined with the thigh injury that has kept him out since New Year’s Day, while there may be a question mark over the fitness of N’Golo Kante after the Frenchman was withdrawn midway through the second half of our midweek draw against Arsenal. Reece James missed the London derby with a knee problem.

Willy Caballero, Fikayo Tomori and Pedro haven’t featured since the Forest win and will be hoping for an opportunity for game time.

Latest Hull City team news

Midfield men Kevin Stewart and Jon Toral are expected to remain sidelined, as is forward Norbert Balogh. Stephen Kingsley, Jordy de Wijs and Kamil Grosicki could return for the Tigers.

Grant McCann’s men are outside Championship play-off contenders, currently seven points adrift of the top six, so will be carefully balancing their league and cup priorities for the visit of the eight-time FA Cup winners.

Top scorer Jarrod Bowen started on the bench for their third round win at Rotherham, though Tom Eaves deputised impressively with a hat-trick in the 3-2 win and could retain his place up front.

Referee and VAR

Craig Pawson is the referee. He has taken charge of two Chelsea away fixtures already this season, which were our defeat at Everton in December and the victory at Arsenal three weeks later. There is no VAR as the game is being played at a Championship stadium.
