It is easy to forget Christian Pulisic is only 20 such is the experience he has already accrued in the game. The American has been reflecting on his newest challenge and what he wants to achieve in this Chelsea team.
Pulisic burst onto the scene with Borussia Dortmund when he was just 17 years of age. Two months after making his debut with the German giants he was selected to represent the US national team, becoming the youngest American to play a World Cup qualifier in the process.
Now he is at Chelsea and preparing to prove himself in the Premier League. He acknowledges the levels of pressure are not the same.
‘Dortmund was a bit different because I came through the academy there, growing up and maybe not having the expectations there,’ said Pulisic. ‘But I wanted to go in and prove myself the best I could and be a part of that team.
‘Here, being a new signing and coming in to the club, I felt that I needed to prove myself and I wanted to show the guys early on, especially my team-mates, that I could play too. Hopefully I have done that a bit and earned their respect. That’s important when you go to a new club.
‘I’m enjoying it. it’s a good change for me coming from Germany. Things are easier with the language, and the club has helped me so much, not just with the football but with everyone else. It’s been great.’
Pulisic has been playing wide on the left in pre-season and he produced his standout performance so far in our 5-3 victory over RB Salzburg. He scored two excellent goals and was fouled for the spot-kick Ross Barkley converted in what was a fluid Chelsea showing going forward.
‘It’s what I am out there to do,’ Pulisic noted. ‘From an attacking position I want to get goals, I want to help my team-mates with assists, and do a lot a good things in the attacking end. Obviously my work defensively is important too.
‘I want to do the best I can and help this team the best I can. It’s pre-season now and I still have my opportunity to prove [myself] when the real season comes around.
‘This team has a lot of quality, and I think I can help with it for sure. Hopefully I can mix with these guys well and we’ll find our way to score goals and win matches.’
