Tomori has made seven appearances for Frank Lampard’s side so far this season, including his first Champions League outings, and netted a sensational opening goal against Wolves at Molineux last month.

Such an impact at the heart of the Chelsea defence has caught the eye of the national team manager, who has named the 21-year-old in a senior England squad for the first time. The centre-back has previously represented his country at Under-20 and Under-21 level.

Abraham also joins his fellow Chelsea Academy graduate in receiving a senior call-up. The striker was last involved in a Three Lions squad two years ago when he made his debut as a starter against Germany at Wembley before coming off the bench in the meeting with Brazil four days later.

Both were friendlies, which have led to speculation that the forward could switch allegiances to play internationally for Nigeria, for whom he qualifies through his father. FIFA rules allow players to change national teams in such circumstances if they have not yet played in a competitive international match at senior level.

However, Abraham has featured for England throughout the age groups, most recently at the Under-21 European Championship this summer.

Eight goals in 10 appearances for the Blues alongside some impressive centre-forward displays have earned recognition for the Londoner, who celebrated his 22nd birthday yesterday with our first goal against Lille. He is currently averaging a Premier League goal every 70 minutes, with only Sergio Aguero recording a better goals tally and goals-per-minute ratio this season.

Mount’s inclusion makes it a hat-trick of Cobham-produced youngsters in Southgate’s squad. The midfielder came on as a substitute in both September qualifiers, the first of which against Bulgaria was his senior England debut. Barkley, who passed the 30-cap mark for his country last month, completes the Chelsea quartet.

Southgate’s side face two qualifiers over the coming days, both away, to Czech Republic next Friday and Bulgaria the following Monday. They currently have a 100 per cent winning record after four games in Group A and know that two more victories would secure top spot.
