Muller looks to avenge 2012 loss

Thomas Muller has reacted to Bayern Munich being drawn against Chelsea in the last 16 of the Champions League by issuing a call for revenge against the Blues for their 2012 final defeat in their own stadium.

Muller gave Bayern an 83rd-minute lead in the game in Munich seven years ago but Didier Drogba equalised late on before converting the winning penalty in the shoot-out to secure a memorable victory for the Blues.

The draw on Monday set up the first Champions League clash between the clubs since that encounter and Muller reacted with an Instagram post which featured a picture of himself celebrating his goal.

In the accompanying text, he wrote: ‘Long time ago’ with an angry face emoji and included several hash tags including one which read #revengeissweet.

The German forward was more measured when he spoke to the media about the draw.

‘As you can expect, there are teams taking part in the round of the last 16 that have European quality, but we are self-confident and I feel really good about the draw,’ said Muller as reported by Sky Sports.

‘I don't know that much about the current situation at Chelsea, I only know the last results and as far as I know they're not performing that well, but I didn't see much of them to be honest.

‘But yeah, they have some forwards, for example [Callum] Hudson-Odoi or Christian Pulisic, who have some well-known qualities, but in football it's not about single players, it's about the team performance.’

Maja attracts Chelsea interest

According to 90min.com, Chelsea are contemplating a January move for Bordeaux forward Josh Maja, who was born in London but plays for Nigeria at international level.

The report suggests the Blues have been impressed with the 20-year-old, who joined the Ligue 1 side from Sunderland earlier this year.

‘The Nigerian has managed seven goals in 23 appearances, only starting eight games,’ states the report.

‘He has struggled to hold down a permanent place in Bordeaux's starting lineup but has still bagged five goals to steer the club up to seventh in Ligue 1, and 90min has learned Chelsea scouts have been seriously impressed with the 20-year-old's performances.

‘His finest moment in a Bordeaux shirt came in a recent 6-0 win over Nîmes Olympique, in which Maja managed three goals and an assist in just his third start of the season.

‘London-born Maja could now be offered the chance to return to his hometown in January as the Blues look to bolster their squad and bounce back from a challenging run of form which has seen them lose four of their last five league games.’

Ake buy-back clause to expire?

The Mirror reports Chelsea may be running out of time in a bid to bring Nathan Ake back from Bournemouth with our buy-back clause on the Dutch defender set to expire in January.

Ake joined the Cherries in the summer of 2017 but Chelsea reportedly inserted a clause in the agreement which allows us first refusal on the centre-back.

With the 24-year-old shining for Eddie Howe’s side, he has reportedly attracted interest from several clubs including Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

‘Frank Lampard will have to make a decision in the January transfer window as the £40m clause is due to expire before the summer window opens,’ states the Mirror, citing a report on the expiry of the buy-back deal in the Athletic.

‘Indeed, the Athletic has claimed that January represents the last chance for Chelsea to sign their former defender in a cut-price deal.

‘The report goes on to say that the Premier League clubs are yet to open discussions over a deal but there is an expectation that Ake may be keen on the move.’
