This month’s issue of Chelsea magazine features an exclusive interview with Cesar Azpilicueta, who looks back at what was an incredible decade and ahead to a bright future for the Blues.
The Spaniard, who recently marked his 100th game captaining the club by scoring against Brighton, played a big part in the 2010s after joining us from Marseille shortly after our Champions League triumph in 2012.In the interview he looks back at those early years at the club, when he was honoured to join a Chelsea squad containing several legendary figures, and what has happened in the intervening years to take us towards the current set-up, which is packed full of exciting talents who have graduated from our Academy.Azpilicueta also reveals what he thinks the incredible success over the decade has taught him about the club. We have lifted 10 major trophies since 2010, which is the joint-most by an English club.‘I think one of the characteristics of Chelsea throughout this period has been winning trophies and even when we didn’t win something, we didn’t have any long spells without lifting a trophy,’ Azpilicueta tells Chelsea, having lifted silverware in five of his seven full seasons as a Blue.
‘That’s obviously a big part of the ambition of the club, to always aim for trophies, and it’s something we have done not only in England, but also in Europe, with the Champions League and the Europa League twice.‘We have won the Premier League a couple of times since I arrived as well, so I think it’s in our DNA that we always fight for trophies and hopefully we can keep going in this direction.’Read the full interview for the skipper’s recollections of his favourite moments as a Chelsea player and what he hopes the club can achieve over the next 10 years.
Magic moments
As this is the first issue of the magazine since the turn of the year, it has picked out a few of its favourite moments of the 2010s in an extensive look back at a decade packed with thrills and spills. There is the return of former favourites, all the best goals, incredible comebacks, slips at Anfield and, obviously, trophies galore. It’s hard to imagine the club managed to cram so much into a 10-year spell, so join Chelsea magazine in reminiscing over what was a truly remarkable period in the Blues’ history.
Munich memories
Of course, the best moment of the lot – and possibly in our entire 115-year history – was a fateful night in Munich, when the stars aligned for the Blues to be crowned champions of Europe for the first time. Chelsea takes you back to that night in 2012 in its latest Champions League Classic, including quotes from all the major protagonists as we finally got our hands on the biggest prize in club football.
