Andy Myers' side sit top of the league and are the only team yet to taste defeat with just seven games of the season remaining. Midfielder Tariq Uwakwe is delighted with the team’s efforts so far.

‘This season has been a really good one,’ he said to the official Chelsea website. ‘We’re top of the league and have been winning a lot of games, going away earning good points and the team seems to be gelling a lot better this year.

Uwakwe has eight league appearances under his belt this campaign and has scored one goal. Four appearances after his return from injury in December, the 20-year-old describes the season from his point of view.

‘It’s been a really tough year in terms of match minutes for me after being out for three months with a blood clot but now that I’m back I’m really enjoying my football, getting on the pitch and getting those 90 minutes back in - I’m really enjoying it.,' he explained.

‘It’s really hard [being out injured]. I’m just getting back into the swing of things. I’m trying to make it work as much as I can and I’m just trying to help the team out as much as possible.’

In our most recent meeting with Leicester, Tino Anjorin and Thierno Ballo rescued a point in a 2-2 draw for Myers’ side. It was an identical scoreline against Everton last Friday and the England Under-19 international hopes the team can go one better at Aldershot tonight.

‘We know how Leicester play from earlier this season and how they usually are from previous years,’ continued Uwakwe. ‘It will be a difficult match but we have just got to keep playing the way we are and see it through. Coming back home after being away means it’s an important game and we want to stay top of the league.

‘We should’ve got more at Everton but it was one of those days. The pitch wasn’t the best and we just got what we could from the game. It was good to get back into the game in the second half and get the point. Tonight we’ve got to keep building and hopefully get the three points.’

Fellow midfielder George McEachran moved to SC Cambuur in his first loan move earlier this week and Uwakwe is pleased to see his team-mates take the next step in their careers.

‘It’s what we need, the next step,’ he stressed. ‘I’m happy that a couple of the boys get to go out and experience that. Obviously it does decrease the impact on the development team but that’s what we want, we want players to come up from the Under-18s and start playing more minutes with the Under-23s. We want to see players making the next step on their journey.’

Our PL2 game against Blackburn Rovers, originally scheduled for Friday 13 March, has been moved to Monday 16 March to allow the fixture to be played at Ewood Park. Kick-off remains 7pm.

Meanwhile, our Under-18s are in action against Southampton tomorrow morning (Saturday). Ed Brand's side are currently second in the league, level on points with league leaders Fulham. Kick-off is 11am.
