Midfielder Jessie Fleming has signed her first professional contract with Chelsea FC Women and the Canadian international spoke to the official Chelsea website following her big move to the Blues.
After signing a three-year contract with the Barclays FA Women’s Super League champions, Fleming has become the third new addition to Emma Hayes’ side ahead of the forthcoming season.
The 22-year-old is excited about her new challenge in England and believes the move will develop her game, as she explains in the interview below…
Firstly a warm welcome to Chelsea, how excited are you to sign?
'I’m extremely excited!'
What are your first impressions of Cobham?
'It’s fantastic, with the grass surface, I’m really excited to practise and play on it. Everyone has been really welcoming, I can’t say anything bad about the facilities and I’m just really excited to be here.'
Did the manager play a big part in your decision to come here?
'A huge part, it’s really important to me that I have a good relationship with the coach and that I’m with someone who I think is going to challenge me and help me reach my goals as an individual.
'She has those accolades in the league and has a track record but I think she’s also someone who cares about her players as people and that’s really important to me when growing off the field.'
Do you know any Chelsea players?
'For sure I knew of the players. Lots of them I’ve played against, Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr, a lot of them internationally. I have a ton of respect for them and am really just humbled to get to share a practice field with them and learn from them. That was definitely a huge draw coming here.'
Are there any players that you are particularly looking forward to playing alongside?
'Different people for different reasons. Those two [Fran and Sam] are forwards so I’m not trying to put a bias on that but I’m really excited to play with Ji and really everyone. I feel like everyone has something I can learn from.'
Have you watched much of the Women’s Super League?
'I have a Canadian team-mate at Man City, Janine Beckie, she’s been there for a year-and-a-half now, so I was watching her closely last season. Maybe the wrong team but I’ve been watching it and the quality is great.'
For Chelsea fans excited to see you in action, how would you describe yourself as a player and what are your top qualities?
'I think I’m an energetic player but I also know when to calm the rhythm of the game down. I think I’m a good passer and I like to be part of the goals, setting up goals and running the tempo in midfield.'
At 22 you have over 75 caps for Canada, you've been to two World Cups and won Bronze at the 2016 Olympics. That’s amazing…
'Thank you! It’s been a great couple of years for me with the national team and getting to play with all the players who are bigger and better than me. I’m excited to be a part of this team and I will hopefully grow here as well.'
It’s clear you have that winning mentality – what do you want to achieve during your time at Chelsea?
'I think everyone’s answer would be the same. Chelsea is a winning club so we want to be the best team in England, the best team in Europe and one of the best clubs in the world. Whatever I can do to make that happen, I’m happy to be a part of it.'
