The boss spoke via video message from the club’s hotel in southern Germany to look forward to tomorrow night’s Champions League round of 16 second-leg meeting with Bayern Munich at a stadium Lampard enjoyed his greatest night in a Blues shirt.

A week after the Cup final defeat in which three of his players left the pitch injured, Lampard confirmed Cesar Azpilicueta, Willian, Pedro and Christian Pulisic were all out of the game, but he had more positive news on two others.

‘Christian we’re looking at a six-week injury, Azpilicueta hopefully not as bad, hopefully a three-week injury,’ detailed Lampard

‘Pedro as we know is moving on but his injury is hopefully a six-week one. He had an operation earlier in the week. Willian’s injury is improving but not right for this game.

‘Ruben Loftus-Cheek is back in the squad, and Kante is in the squad. They are both fit to start.’

Pulisic’s injury will likely keep him out for the beginning of 2020/21

‘It’s going to be touch and go for the start of the season. Six weeks probably gets into the start of the season, but we have to treat the injury right.

‘In the big scheme of things, when Christian reflects on his first season, he should be very happy with his improvement levels. He’s had the most goals and assists in his career, and that’s in his first season in the Premier League.

‘We’ll get him fit and get him ready. If he misses the first one or two games, we’ll have a firing Christian and hopefully as hungry as he looked after restart.’

Lampard was asked if he really believed his team could turn around a 3-0 deficit from the first leg

‘I believe we can, otherwise I shouldn’t be here. We have to believe, more importantly the players have to believe as they take on this game.

‘It’s a huge task, no doubt. It’s going to be extremely tough, but games have turned to big degrees, some famous games, great games, so we have to believe we have the opportunity to do something special.

‘We have to go into the game with that thought, give everything to the game, play with confidence, and that’s what I expect to see from the players. Not an attitude of this being a difficult match in a negative sense, it has to be a positive sense.’

Willian’s future remains undecided and Lampard gave an update on the Brazilian

‘Willian remains our player at the moment. He’s injured and was injured for the Cup final, and for tomorrow, and would have given everything to play in those games. He has carried this injury for the latter part of restart.

‘He’s been here for seven seasons and been a big part of successful teams. When I came in this year, and we had a transitional element to the whole group, Willian was one I relied on in terms of experience and quality, and he’s shown me that all year.

‘Mine and his relationship is really close. If he does move on I would have no feeling of disappointment. I’ve played with him, coached him, and he’s a fantastic man and fantastic player.

‘He will feel like that about Chelsea, and I don’t want anyone to find a negative attitude because the club have acted very well in this as well. If he moves on, I would wish him well and that’s where we are at now.’
