After picking the ball out of the back of his net on four separate occasions at the Allianz Arena, Willy Caballero might not have been the obvious choice to seek the positives from our Champions League elimination but the veteran goalkeeper was in reflective mood after the game as he discussed the contest and what we must do to close the gap on Europe’s elite.

The Argentinian conceded an early penalty from which Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring and from that point on, an already uphill task looked insurmountable for Frank Lampard’s side against the German champions, despite Tammy Abraham pulling a goal back late in the first half.

However, there were some reasons to be proud as we refused to throw in the towel and kept on fighting, often matching Bayern Munich for long periods of the game before being caught out in those all-too-familiar moments of defensive ill-discipline.

‘The total score after two games is very tough,’ said Caballero. ‘We started the game knowing it would be tough because of what happened at Stamford Bridge in the first leg but we tried to play this game in the same way and go face-to-face with them from the beginning.

‘The penalty and the first goal killed us but after that we worked really well. We did everything we could and scored a couple of goals, although obviously one was disallowed. We have to go home knowing we tried and did our best.’

Caballero and his team-mates will now take a brief respite before the 2020/21 season begins in earnest next month, with the group already boosted by the arrivals of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

In terms of making the team more competitive in the knockout stages of the Champions League next term, the 38-year-old feels the duo will provide a big boost.

‘We have to think about recovering well our injured players because we have a lot,’ he said about responding to the disappointment of two cup exits. ‘We didn’t miss them too much today and that’s good news.

‘I think we have to start next season in the same way that we started this season, going step by step and game by game. We have done well in the Premier League and of course we have some new players arriving to work with us and they will have a lot to give us next season.’
