It will be a second successive year in the Championship for the 23-year-old, who helped Luton Town retain their league status last term with a string of impressive displays and a team-high eight assists. The Hatters finished 19th, three places and three points clear of danger.

Brown has been a Chelsea player since the summer of 2013 when he signed from West Brom at the age of 16. He captained our Under-19s to UEFA Youth League glory in 2014/15, scoring a brace in the final against Shakhtar Donetsk, and he was also part of the Under-18s team which lifted the FA Youth Cup, netting in the second leg of our final win over Manchester City.

The forward made his senior debut against his former club in the penultimate Premier League game of the 2014/15 campaign and then embarked on a maiden loan to Vitesse the following season, where he made 24 appearances.

Spells at Rotherham and Huddersfield followed in 2016/17 and he ended that season helping the Terriers to promotion via the play-offs having scored five times in the second half of the campaign.

Injuries hampered subsequent loans at Premier League Brighton and then Leeds but Brown re-established his fitness and form at Kenilworth Road in 2019/20, playing 28 times and contributing to nine goals.

He joins a Sheffield Wednesday side who will start the season with a 12-point deduction following breaches of financial fair play rules. The Owls finished 16th last term under Garry Monk.

Chelsea Football Club can also confirm the signing of Xavier Mbuyamba from Barcelona. The 18-year-old signed a professional contract at Cobham earlier this week and will join our development squad ahead of preparations for the new campaign.

A Dutch Under-19 international, Mbuyamba is a tall right-footed central defender who enjoys playing with the ball at his feet and is equally as strong in the air. He joined his local team MVV Maastrict as an Under-9 and progressed through the age groups before signing at the Nou Camp last summer.

After being watched closely by the Blues, the Dutchman has made the switch to west London, committing himself to the club until at least 2023.
