It was an excellent week for those Chelsea loanees plying their trade in England, and there was action on the continent too with three Blues making debuts for their new club…
The headline performer in the past seven days has undoubtedly been Tariq Uwakwe. The Academy midfielder marked his Accrington Stanley debut with a hat-trick against Leeds Under-23s in the midweek EFL Trophy action, that game ending 7-0, and backed it up with a superb curling effort against Peterborough on his first senior league appearance. His strike from outside the box sealed an impressive 2-0 victory for Stanley against a hotly-tipped Posh outfit.
Also at League One level, our new young goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe made his professional debut for Burton Albion in a 3-3 EFL Trophy with Peterborough, making several good saves in the second half before the Brewers were beaten on penalties.
Further up in the Championship, it was an excellent Saturday for three Chelsea loanees. Jamal Blackman kept a clean sheet as Rotherham stole a 1-0 win at his former club Wycombe, the only goal coming in the second minute of stoppage time.
Sheffield Wednesday started the season on minus 12 points following an EFL punishment over the summer, and they immediately chalked three off that deficit with a 2-0 success away to Cardiff. Izzy Brown set up an early opening goal with an inviting centre finished by Josh Windass.
A third Championship away win was secured by Swansea and Marc Guehi. Fresh from a good few days with England’s Under-21s, the defender helped keep Preston at bay, and down the other end Morgan Gibbs-White netted with the Swans’ only shot on target at Deepdale.
Further down the pyramid, Jamie Cumming made his Football League debut as Stevenage drew 1-1 at newly-promoted Barrow. Cumming made a couple of good stops in the second half to limit Barrow’s lead to one, and a late penalty earned The Boro a point.
Moving over the Channel, there was a Ligue 1 debut for Trevoh Chalobah, who came off the bench for the final eight minutes of Lorient’s 3-2 defeat at home to Lens, for whom Gael Kakuta scored.
Other debuts in Europe were given to Kenedy at Granada, who played the final 10 minutes of their 2-0 home win at home to Athletic Bilbao, and Armando Broja, who was involved for the closing stages of Vitesse Arnhem’s 1-0 victory at RKC Waalwijk.
There were also starts for Ike Ugbo and Danilo Pantic as Cercle Brugge and Cukaricki were beaten by Anderlecht and Red Star Belgrade respectively.
