Lewis Baker will spend the 2020/21 season on loan with Turkish club Trabzonspor.
At his latest loan club he will again work under ex-Chelsea midfielder Eddie Newton, who spent many years in various coaching roles with the Blues men’s first team, Academy and loan players. Newton was appointed permanent Trabzonspor manager last month after leading them to victory in the Turkish Cup and a second-place finish in the league as caretaker boss.It will be a fourth season abroad for Baker, who spent two years in the Netherlands with Vitesse Arnhem and made nine appearances for Fortuna Dusseldorf in the German top flight last term.The two-footed midfielder has been with Chelsea since Under-10s level and frequently captained our youth side, reaching the finals of the FA Youth Cup and the NextGen Series. He was named Player of the Tournament in the latter competition which was a forerunner to the UEFA Youth League. He has been named Chelsea Young Player of the Year and scored a goal against Manchester United which secured the Under-21 Premier League title in 2014. In addition, his flicked back-heel against Arsenal for the youth team was voted by fans as Chelsea’s Goal of the Season that same year.
Baker’s senior Blues debut came in January 2014, when he was introduced off the bench to replace Oscar in a 2-0 victory over Derby County in the FA Cup third round.The 25-year-old also has experience of the English leagues through previous loans, in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday, Reading, Leeds United and Middlesbrough, and when helping MK Dons to earn promotion to the second tier.
