The form
Chelsea went into the international break in good stead having put nine goals past Bristol City at our KT1 home. With nine different players finding the back of the net, the result went down in the Women’s Super League history as having the highest number of goalscorers in a single match.
Fran Kirby got us underway with her first goal since May 2019 – since returning to full fitness after recovering from a rare condition called pericarditis – with a quarter of an hour gone. Maren Mjelde doubled our advantage when she confidently converted from the spot after Ji So-Yun was brought down in the box, sparking a run of four goals in nine minutes. Melanie Leupolz was next on the scoresheet, opening her Chelsea account with a thumping diving header, and she was soon joined by Erin Cuthbert and Millie Bright. Cuthbert’s effort flew in from range and Bright powerfully headed home a Mjelde free-kick on the stroke of half-time.
Our 2019/20 Player of the Season, Bethany England, registered her first goal this season when she reacted quickly to a rebound to turn home and then substitutes Niamh Charles and Pernille Harder finished smartly to join Leupolz in scoring their maiden goals for the Blues. With only minutes left on the clock, Sam Kerr added to the scoring when she confidently placed her shot beyond Sophie Baggaley in goal.
Our league opener ended in a 1-1 draw away to a tough Manchester United side. Kerr notched her first goal of the campaign with a clever finish at the near post after meeting Kirby’s drilled cross but United cancelled out our lead in the closes stages of the game.
Sunday’s opponent have had a strong start to the season having won their two opening WSL matches. They went into the international break having beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0. Nicoline Sorensen, who came off the Everton bench, made a positive impact having set up Izzy Christiansen to nod home on the 51st minute. The Toffees’ league opener resulted in a comfortable 4-0 win at Bristol City. Simone Magill found the opener minutes into the match with a first-time volley and they extended their lead on the 19th minute when Lucy Graham tapped in a cross close-range. Graham added the third of the encounter with a well-placed penalty just after the hour mark and substitute Valerie Gauvin thumped home the fourth goal.
Previous FA Cup outing
The Blues reached the quarter-final of the competition by beating Everton's neighbours Liverpool 1-0 at Kingsmeadow in February. Chelsea dominated proceedings from the first whistle and after some missed opportunities in the early stages, Guro Reiten gave us the lead just before the half-hour mark. The Norwegian was found by a neat flick-on from Sophie Ingle and Reiten finished emphatically by firing a volley past the keeper to ensure we advanced to the last eight of the cup.
Everton got to the quarter-final stage after winning 5-0 away to Bristol City.
Chelsea vs Everton recent head-to-head record
The two sides did not meet last season as our first Women’s Super League game in December was postponed because Everton’s pitch was frozen and our home fixture was not fulfilled as the campaign was curtailed due to Covid-19.
Back in 2018/19 we came up against the Toffees on three occasions, twice resulting in victory and the other in a goalless draw. The last time we played Everton was in February 2019 in the fourth round of the FA Cup and we progressed to the next round courtesy of two second-half goals from Drew Spence and Hannah Blundell. Spence finished off a well-worked counter-attacking goal just after the hour mark to open the scoring before Blundell tapped home from close-range in added time to seal the victory.
In the home WSL fixture of that campaign, we enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win at Kingsmeadow and the tone was set early on by Bethany England who tucked away a finish after only six minutes. But we had to wait until the final third of the contest for the scoreline to reflect our dominance. Spence made it 2-0 on the hour and then Blundell's curler from outside the box put the game out of Everton's reach.
The away fixture of that term was in September 2018 and finished in a frustrating goalless draw. Spence hit the crossbar late on and Kirby also fired wide as we failed to make the breakthrough.
