Ampadu shines in Sheff Utd defeat

While Ethan Ampadu was unable to help Sheffield United avoid defeat against Yorkshire rivals Leeds United on Sunday, Blades manager Chris Wilder saw encouraging signs from the performance of the Welsh youngster, Team Talk reports.

The 20-year-old replaced the suspended John Egan to make his first-ever Premier League start but saw his side lose 1-0 to a late goal by former Chelsea forward Patrick Bamford.

The result left the Blades at the bottom of the table after consecutive defeats but Wilder was impressed by the way the Chelsea loanee slotted into their defensive setup.

‘It was totally new playing in a back three for Ethan [Ampadu] and I thought he was excellent,’ said the Sheffield United boss.

‘There has not been much chance to integrate the players so they have to get on with it which they did.

‘The shape, organisation and work rate was good. You can’t create the chance we have done today and be sitting on the crossbar but yet again opportunities to score and be clinical, which Leeds were and we weren’t, decide the game.’

Inter give up Kante interest

Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio has ruled out a move for N'Golo Kante in the current transfer window, goal.com reports.

Recent media reports in Italy have linked the French star with a reunion with former Chelsea coach Antonio Conte at the San Siro but Ausilio admitted such a move was unlikely to happen as the Italian club are already well stocked in the midfield department.

‘Kante is an important part of Chelsea, I don't think he will be up for sale,’ he explained to DAZN.

‘We have eight important central midfielders, we will begin and move forward with them.’

‘Inter set out with the mission of playing well, like in every season. The pre-season went well, both in Italy and in the Europa League, where we were just one step away from winning.’

Minto did not consider Newton as a manager

Scott Minto has told tribalfootball.com he did not expect his former Chelsea team-mate Eddie Newton to go into football management because of his laid-back character.

Having served as an assistant coach at MK Dons, West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea, Newton is now in charge of Turkish side Trabzonspor, a position Minto never envisioned when he played alongside the midfielder at Stamford Bridge.

‘Eddie and I are very similar characters, we're both quite laid-back,’ said Minto of the 48-year-old

‘In terms as a person, to become a coach, I wouldn't have said that. A top, top guy. I really like Eddie. But in terms of being a manager and everything that brings, even more so in today's football, no I wouldn't have called it.

‘But he definitely has got the tactical nous. As a player, a very clever player. A clever man. And he would have learnt lots from his time at Chelsea as a coach and what he did with Robbie (Di Matteo) in the Champions League with Chelsea.’
