Marco van Ginkel will return to PSV Eindhoven on loan for the 2020/21 season.
The Dutch midfielder will be in his third spell with the club, having previously won two Eredivisie titles at PSV, in 2016 and 2018, the second one of those as captain.
Van Ginkel heads back to his native Netherlands over two years after his last match, having needed a long rehabilitation period following surgery to resolve a knee injury.
After his move from Vitesse Arnhem in 2013, his four Chelsea appearances all came prior to injury early in his debut season. That was followed by time at AC Milan and Stoke City, but he has enjoyed most of his success during his time on loan at PSV. He first moved there in January 2016 and his eight league goals in 16 games from midfield, including one on his debut, played a big part in the Eindhoven side retaining the Eredivisie title that year.
Injury meant he missed the start of the following season but following his recovery he returned to the Phillips Stadion for another loan, later extended to 18 months, when the transfer window reopened in January 2017.
Again, he scored in the first match of his loan at PSV and proved a regular source of goals from midfield. His contribution to the team was acknowledged when he was appointed club captain in Eindhoven for the 2017/18 season and he skippered them to glory, claiming the Dutch title with a memorable 3-0 win over fierce rivals Ajax.
It was that summer Van Ginkel underwent major surgery on his knee, but the 27-year-old’s return was signalled earlier this year when he signed a one-year contract extension with Chelsea in June, taking his time as a Blue into an eighth season.
