Starting in Reykjavik, where Iceland hosted Denmark, Christensen completed the 90 minutes for the away side who won 3-0. An own goal set the Danes on their way on the stroke of half-time, and they asserted their dominance after the interval with further strikes from Christian Eriksen and Robert Skov.

It was a pretty quiet evening’s work for Christensen, with Denmark enjoying 67 per cent of the possession and attempting 16 shots to Iceland’s seven. They move three points behind England in Group A2 ahead of a trip to Wembley on Wednesday.

A high-profile meeting in Paris between Euro 2016 finalists France and Portugal did not live up to expectations, with the sides cancelling each other out and creating almost no clear chances.

Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante started for Les Bleus. Giroud took a nasty blow to his head with barely a minute played but was fine to carry on. He was subbed off for Anthony Martial with 17 minutes remaining; Kante completed the whole game.

Both sides move to seven points, with the return fixture in Lisbon next month set to prove pivotal in dictating who comes out on top of Nations League Group A3.

It was also a case of defences on top in Gdansk, where Poland and Italy played out a goalless draw. Jorginho and Emerson featured throughout, and although Italy dominated the ball and the shot count, just two of their 17 attempts tested the hosts’ keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Group A1 remains tight, with Italy a point ahead of Poland and the Netherlands at the halfway stage.

Both the games in Paris and Gdansk had a small number of spectators allowed in.

Earlier on Sunday, Mason Mount scored the winner for England, who beat Belgium 2-1 at Wembley, and Mateo Kovacic and Croatia won by the same scoreline against Sweden.

There were goalless draws for Wales’ Ethan Ampadu and Albania’s Armando Broja, who played the full game in Ireland and Kazakhstan respectively.
