It was an even contest between the nations that met twice at the 2018 World Cup. On those occasions Roberto Martinez’s side came out on top, but history did not repeat itself in London yesterday despite Romelu Lukaku’s early penalty.

First Marcus Rashford equalised with a spot-kick of his own, and then, midway through the second period, Mount fired in a deflected effort for his first England goal at Wembley. It secured a crucial UEFA Nations League victory for the Three Lions.

‘It’s a special achievement,’ said Mount afterwards.

‘You take them all day, no matter how they go in! I found myself in a bit of space in the box and I had only one thing in my mind: to try and get the ball out of my body and shoot. Big deflection, but you take them.

‘It’s a massive win for us and it will do a lot for confidence,’ added Mount. ‘We want to be pushing and we can do that with the players we have got in the team. We have got the mentality and the work ethic to keep pushing and get better and better. That’s the path we are on at the moment.’

Mount also noted how England improved after the break to seize the initiative against such a dangerous side.

‘We had to be on it defensively because they are very good around the box and play very good football. They make it tough to press and win the ball back.

‘We were hanging in there at half-time. We got in at 1-1 and could regroup and talk about what we could do better, and try and fix the problems we were having: to stay higher, put pressure on the ball, try to win it back as quickly as we could, and also be better on the ball, try and keep it in their half, create chances. We managed to do that in second half.’

The victory moves England above Belgium in Group A2 of Nations League qualifying. The teams will reconvene in Brussels next month, with England's next assignment at home to Denmark on Wednesday.
