Speaking exclusively to our principle shirt sponsor Three ahead of a new content series called ‘Connect with’, Werner rewound to his early days as a wide-eyed child watching football on the television.

Now 24, Werner grew up during a period of dominance for the Blues on the domestic and continental stage. It is one of the reasons he is so excited to have joined us.

'For me it is a little bit of a dream come true to come and play now in the biggest league in the whole world,’ said Werner.

'As a child in Germany you don’t see much of the Premier League, but you see the teams in the Champions League.

'You see Chelsea and Manchester United. These were the clubs in my youth that won a lot. You see maybe young Ronaldo, or at Chelsea Drogba and also Frank Lampard the manager. They have a lot of legends in the club here.

'When you come into the club they are working for the club. When you see them as a child, like 10, and then you see Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Petr Cech, you say "wow it’s crazy I am here with them now".

'It’s a lot of fun.'

Werner is a month into his competitive Chelsea career and has already looked seriously sharp, with his individual highlight so far being the super strike he netted away to Tottenham. One thing that has been missing, though, are Blues supporters being able to enjoy his electric movement in the flesh.

'It’s been a little bit difficult without fans because I think in the Premier League the fans have an important role, especially here, in the whole game,' he said.

'It’s different because in Germany they always sing and always have fun. But here the fans are a lot in the game.

'They watch it and they love it when you tackle, create a chance or score. That feeling is special.

'I felt it with Leipzig when we played Tottenham. It was crazy the feeling you had. It was a different feeling to the Bundesliga. I am looking forward to having the fans back here and playing normal Premier League games. That will be good for everybody.’

Werner certainly has a special connection with the no.11 shirt and in the video interview, which can be watched above, he explained why he opted for that number.

'I think it’s a good number for a striker and also it worked very well at Leipzig, my old club, where I had the number for four years', he said.

'I love the number 11. I have it as well in the German national team. Yeah I think my number is very good. It fits good to me and I love to have two numbers on the back.

'It looks a little better for me on my back to have two numbers rather than one.'
