We face the third of the teams in our Champions League group this week, and our preview begins with all the key facts and figures...

Chelsea have never met Rennes in European competition. They will be the 56th different side we have met in the Champions League and the sixth from France.

Our most recent meeting against a Ligue 1 side was against Lille in last season's Champions League group stage, when we won home and away. Tammy Abraham scored in both games with Cesar Azpilicueta getting the winner in the second game at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have lost only one of our nine home matches against Ligue 1 visitors (five wins, three draws), Paris Saint-Germain were 2-1 winners at Stamford Bridge in the 2015/16 round of 16 second leg to win the tie 4-2 on aggregate.

Chelsea stats

Chelsea are looking to extend our unbeaten run to seven games since we were eliminated on penalties to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup. Our only defeat in 90 minutes this season (11 games) was against Liverpool when we played the last 50 minutes with 10 men.

Wednesday will be our 99th game in the group stage of the Champions League and we need one point to reach 200 in the 17 seasons we have been in the competition (excluding the second group stage in 1999/2000).

Frank Lampard’s side are unbeaten in seven Champions League group matches since our home defeat to Valencia on matchday one last season (four wins, three defeats).

The Valencia defeat is the only one in our previous 15 home games in the competition, We have won nine and drawn five of those.

Chelsea are looking to keep a clean sheet in three consecutive Champions League matches for the first time since October/November 2013 against Steaua Bucharest and Schalke twice.

The last occasion we started a campaign with three consecutive clean sheets in the group stage was in 2009/10 when Carlo Ancelotti was in charge.

Edouard Mendy has kept five clean sheets in his six appearances for the Blues and has only conceded one goal which was on his debut against Tottenham.

Hakim Ziyech has been directly involved in 13 goals in his last 15 starts in the Champions League, scoring six goals and assisting a further seven.

Ziyech is the first player to score in his first two starts for Chelsea since Diego Costa in August 2014.

Milestones

If selected, Olivier Giroud will make his 50th start for Chelsea in all competitions.

Against Burnley, Kurt Zouma made his 100th start for the club and Mason Mount started for the Blues for the 50th time.

Rennes are making their Champions League debut in 2020/21 having finished third in Ligue 1 last season.

They are playing in Europe for the third successive season.

Having reached the Europa League round of 16 in 2018/19, Julien Stephan's side finished fourth in their section in the same competition last season, picking up four points to finish behind Celtic, CFR Cluj and Lazio.

Rennes have won one of their last nine European matches (six defeats and two draws).

Rennes have lost their past five European away matches. Their last win on the road was against Real Betis in the 2018/19 Europa League round of 32.

Rennes have lost both away games against English clubs and won both at home. Their most recent trip ended in a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal in the 2018/19 Europa League round of 16. The other was at Aston Villa in the 2001 Intertoto Cup semi-final when they lost by the only goal. They are still seeking their first goal in England.

Rennes have kept one clean sheet in their last 12 European games conceding 18 goals in the process.

Thirteen Rennes players made their first appearance in the Champions League group stage on Matchday 1, including goalscorer Sehrou Guirassy. Only Steven Nzonzi and Martin Terrier had previously appeared in the competition.
