Two first-half penalties from Timo Werner and a predatory finish after the restart from Tammy Abraham sealed victory for the Blues, who stay top of Group E with seven points now on the board.

Lampard was particularly pleased with the professionalism on show from his team, who played 50 minutes of the contest against 10 men but did not relent in their attacking approach and defensive desire.

‘I enjoyed it tonight,’ said the boss. ‘It shows the work we’re doing and the direction we’re going. We did the right things in every aspect - started well, got our goals, saw the game out well and had the chance to give others minutes later on.

‘We dealt with the early part of the second half really well. It’s not always easy against 10 men when they’ve had a bit of time to talk and arrange themselves but we kept the ball moving in the early parts of the second half.

‘The professional elements of our game were really good against good opposition. We couldn’t underestimate them and we saw when it was 11 versus 11 that they’re a physical, technical team but we won pretty well.’

There was discussion about our penalty takers after Werner stepped up…

‘It wasn’t an easy decision because Jorginho has been pretty faultless for us. He missed two recently, then Timo came in and scored one in our last game. I had a conversation with Jorginho and his answer was perfect for a professional in that he doesn’t care who takes them as long as we score.

‘That’s how he approaches it so Timo took them tonight. He’s our taker at the moment and he took them very emphatically so I’m happy.’

Frank was also happy with a fifth consecutive clean sheet, the first time we’ve achieved that in a decade…

‘I’m pleased because it’s work, it’s the team, it’s players that are in there confident and fit. We’re working as a collective, with individuals within that performing really well at the back-end of the team and that’s good for us. These stats are great but we cannot come off it at all and that’s why I’m pleased we saw it through at the end of the game.’

Abraham scored and received praise for his all-round game…

‘I’m very happy with Tammy. I’ve had numerous conversations with him and we have a good relationship. We brought in attacking players in the summer but players that are versatile in their nature. I know the qualities he brings to the team when he’s at his best, like tonight and at Burnley. He got his goal, stretches teams, sets the press and gets the team up the pitch. Those are all things that are maybe slightly unseen but they’re really important for me.’

‘He showed up in UEFA testing on Monday so we retested yesterday when we found that out. Thankfully everyone else tested negative, which is good. Kai is at home isolating and he’s disappointed because he just wants to play. He had minor symptoms yesterday which escalated a bit today but he’s fine.’
