Emma Hayes is expecting a difficult game against Everton at Kingsmeadow on Sunday but the Chelsea FC Women manager believes the best of her side is yet to come…
The Blues have won four games on the bounce, a run which began after our slender 2-1 defeat to tomorrow’s opponent Everton in the 2019/20 FA Cup quarter-final at the end of September.Hayes praised the good work that manager Willie Kirk is doing at Everton and considers the Toffees as contenders for the Women’s Super League title this season.‘Everton have been outstanding, their recruitment was top notch and the most impressive thing is their team ethic, their selfless behaviours for each other and they are a team that plays with no ego,’ said the Chelsea manager.‘I like that about them, I think that’s why they will be a contender this year. They don’t have individuals and it’s been impressive to watch how they stay in games, how they work for each other and how no job is too big for them as a group.‘Our team has to accept that the quality is better across the league and the way you accept that is to make sure the team comes first in everything. Even though we are champions, champions don’t rest on previous games, so whatever this team did last season is totally irrelevant.‘It’s what we do day in, day out at training that matters because everyone around us is extremely hungry.‘I don’t think the team is at its best level yet but it will be when everyone puts the team at the heart of everything we do.’
On Tuesday evening midfielder Erin Cuthbert notched her fourth goal of the season when she broke the deadlock in our 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur with a sublime strike from 25-yards out. Hayes had nothing but praise for the 22-year-old, who has been in fine form having scored more goals than any other Chelsea player so far this term.‘Players like Erin, her commitment to the team, the selfless work she does off the ball, her mindset to want to improve and be a good team player has always impressed me.‘For Erin to go to the next level it’s important she takes on all the little details with focus and intensity to find a whole new level for herself.’Chelsea Women will be marking Remembrance Day and supporting the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal at tomorrow’s match. We will be wearing special-edition shirts embroidered with a poppy and all shirts will then be signed and donated to the Legion for auction after the game. Both sides will also be honouring those who have lost their lives in conflict across the world with a minute's silence prior to kick-off.‘I’m of a generation that can remember what war has been like,’ Hayes said. ‘I’ve lived through the Falklands War and I have grandparent-age relatives that have fought in the war.‘I don’t think you can ever forget the sacrifice that millions made to make sure that we could live in a democratic and free world.’Tomorrow’s match is being broadcast live on the BBC Red Button from 11.50am.
