Ben Chilwell might not have known much about his second Chelsea goal but he explained it was reward for tactical work done on the training ground.
The left-back stole in at the far post and managed to get enough on an inviting, inswinging Hakim Ziyech cross to put us 2-1 up against Sheffield United on Saturday.
Even if his connection was not the cleanest, Chilwell felt the outcome was deserved for his determination to get himself in the six-yard box.
‘Although I didn’t know much about it, I’ll take it and it’s another goal so I’m happy!’ he laughed.
‘I have been told to get in at the back post, we’ve worked on that a lot with Hakim cutting in and crossing it to the back post, and me or Timo being there.
‘I didn’t really have my bearings to be honest, it was a bit of everything, the post, the goalkeeper. I thought I would just get in the back post and hopefully it would hit me and go across goal or go in.
‘I was lucky it went in the goal. I didn’t know it had gone in until I saw Tammy looking at me smiling.
‘At half-time all the boys said when you get in at the back post you make your own luck,’ he added.
‘I have had a few chances at the back post this season that haven’t quite gone in, and the one that did I probably didn’t deserve more than others.’
Chilwell revealed he marked the goal with a little jump and a fist-pump in honour of a team-mate.
‘The last few goals I’ve scored I’ve not done a celebration, so I thought I would do a little celebration.
’I like Tammy so I did his! He was just laughing at me and asking what I knew about that goal!’
For the first time in quite a while the Blues had to deal with a conceded goal; in fact, this was the first time we had gone behind in a game since trailing West Brom 3-0 at half-time in late September.
Our response to doing so was emphatic, with Abraham equalising within 14 minutes and Chilwell completing the turnaround not long after. Two more efforts late on added gloss to an excellent home performance.
‘It would have been nice to get another clean sheet, but the way we reacted after the first goal showed the character in the team.
‘Going 1-0 down against Sheffield United can be difficult, they’re very resilient, and we knew it was going to be a challenge. So to get four goals after conceding shows great character.’
