Chances came and went for Chelsea, who will be left upset with their lack of conversion and the manner in which Everton’s two goals were conceded.

Myers had mixed emotions following the final whistle after he watched his side control large parts of the game but ultimately return to Cobham with little to show for their valiant efforts.

‘You come away from performances like that with mixed emotions - pleased to an extent but overall disappointed by certain aspects,’ Myers told the official Chelsea website. ‘We struggled in both boxes and lacked that bit of quality in the final third after there was some really good play to get in behind the Everton defence.

'Sometimes when you don’t relieve pressure in a game by scoring, you're put under even more pressure to defend your own goal and we didn’t deal with their biggest strengths as well as we should have done.

'I thought we controlled the game away from home and got nothing out of it. It’s one of those matches which you have to make sure you come away from without a defeat and the best teams usually show that but we couldn’t quite manage it on the day.’

Goalless at the break, Tino Anjorin and Dynel Simeu had gone closest for the Blues but Everton snatched their chance to take the lead 10 minutes after the restart and their bit of luck cost the development squad points.

‘Coming in at half-time, I was pretty pleased,' added Myers. 'We had opportunities in the first half and were set up to go again after the break with the same mentality, intensity and drive to keep on doing the right things but goals change games. When Everton scored, their mentality changed to drop deep and defend their lead which made it harder for us to break them down.

‘Despite conceding we were still in control and getting the ball into the box at every given chance and that's what is bittersweet for me. We had so much of the game but to come away from it with nothing leaves quite a sour taste.’

The development squad are back in action after the international break with a crucial game in the EFL Trophy when they head west to take on Bristol Rovers in the EFL Trophy. That one takes place on Tuesday 18 November, kick-off 7pm.
