The form

On Sunday Chelsea extended our unbeaten run in the league to 28 games on Sunday when we triumphed 3-2 against London neighbours West Ham. It was forward Sam Kerr who netted her first Chelsea hat-trick to seal the three points in a fiercely contested London derby. Emma Hayes’ undefeated side sit in third place behind leaders Manchester United and Arsenal, with one game in hand.

Prior to last weekend’s game, the Blues went three weeks without a fixture due to the international break.

Benfica, who are level on points in the Portuguese top flight with rivals Sporting CP, were last in action in mid-November when they were defeated for the first time this term against their fellow title contenders. The match which took place prior to the UEFA Women’s Euro qualifiers ended in a 3-0 defeat.

The debutants in the European competition booked their place in the last 32 by beating Greek side PAOK 3-1 and Belgium outfit Anderlecht 2-1 in the qualifying rounds.

The history of Benfica

Benfica Women were formed in 2017 and they began their debut season in Portugal’s second division where they dominated the league having scored a whopping 257 goals, conceding zero. Their exceptional first campaign began in September 2018 with 28-0 triumph over UD Ponte de Frielas, which was a new highest winning record in Portuguese senior football and in January 2019, Benfica broke their own record by thrashing CP Prego 32-0.

It comes as no surprise that Benfica were crowned the champions and received promotion to the top flight where they are in their second season. Just like the FA Women’s Super League, the Campeonato Nacional Feminino was curtailed due to Covid-19 last term and as Benfica were top of league standings at the time, they were selected by the Portuguese Football Federation to compete in the European competition.

Chelsea v Benfica head-to-head record

Tomorrow will be the first time the two clubs square up to each other in women’s football.
