Prior to the West Ham fixture, Werner admitted he was ‘struggling a little bit’ of late having got his Chelsea career off to a flier, adding the Premier League was ‘tougher than I thought’.

Lampard was asked about those quotes at his press conference this afternoon under the umbrella of ‘Werner underestimating the Premier League.’ The boss was keen to make sure they have been interpreted correctly.

‘Honesty is a good thing, but whether it gets taken in the right context I’m not always sure,’ said Lampard.

‘We crave honesty and then we sometimes hang on every word. I don’t think underestimating is quite the right word for him or translation of what he feels.

‘I know he wanted to come here and be a success and I know he understood the rigours of the Premier League. It’s just a fact when you’re here in action there are different challenges.

‘I talk to him all the time,’ added Lampard. ‘I don’t sense his frustration.

‘Clearly as a striker you want to be scoring regularly because you get judged and that’s what he’s done in his career, but at the same time every striker has patches where the ball doesn’t drop to you for whatever reason.

‘The positive thing is he is getting chances in games, using his attributes to get in the box and get chances, so they will come.’

One man who had no trouble finding the net on Monday was Tammy Abraham, and Lampard discussed his development and what the 23-year-old needs to do now.

‘I’m pleased with Tammy. He offers a lot, we saw that the other night, we have seen that this season when he’s played. Him and Oli have offered us a lot at different times, so he just has to keep working and keep progressing.

‘Last season was a real breakthrough season for him in terms of the Premier League and being Chelsea’s number nine, and there is more work he can do but I’m very happy with him.’
