Left-back Ben Chilwell came as close as anyone to turning one point into three for Chelsea yesterday at Stamford Bridge. His late volley was sweetly hit but it whistled past the far post so the score against Aston Villa remained 1-1.
Despite the two dropped points, Chilwell confirmed both Frank Lampard and the players thought better of their display than the one in the 3-1 defeat against Arsenal.‘He is more pleased than he was the other day,’ the 24-year-old said of Lampard’s reaction in the changing room after the game.‘It is a draw at home and we want to be winning these games but the effort and the performance was a lot better in this game. The mentality was the main thing we wanted from it, that was better.‘I know it is disappointing we have drawn the game but we have to look at the positives, which is 48 hours later after a pretty poor performance we have played well and shown good character.’
He may not have scored the winner but he did provide the cross for Olivier Giroud’s goal and Chilwell has already matched his best season for Premier League assists with four. He also has two goals.‘I know the way we want to play at Chelsea is with the full-backs joining in. I have that licence that when I do go forward I know the midfielders are going to cover me. I do like to get forward but the priority is obviously defending, but when I have the opportunity to go forward I do.’It was by getting into an advance position that Chilwell almost snatched it at the death.
‘It was the last minute of the game, Callum put a lovely ball in so I thought I might as well just hit it and I could not have hit it any better,’ he said. ‘At the moment we are not quite getting the rub of the green, maybe on another day that goes in, but we will keep working hard and try to put things right.’
