In the latest Ask Frank video, which can watched in full above, the boss is focused on the FA Cup.
With his team in action in the competition this weekend, Lampard, in the exclusive interview, reports on what the past week was like for players and staff in the wake of the Man City defeat and on how training has been. The FA Cup, a competition Lampard says he ‘has always loved’ is discussed in general and details how preparations must be for a game against a League Two side like Morecambe. With Chelsea last knocked out in round three back in 1998, Lampard also recalls one of those ties from his playing days.‘We had pretty good times and sometimes you draw lower league opponents and it can be difficult in different ways but you have to do the job right.‘I remember we played Macclesfield and Jose Mourinho was our manager and he gave me four days off in the week and said go away, you are not going to play this game, have a rest and I started to relax for three days. Then he called me on Friday afternoon and told me that I need to play.‘I had actually gone to the countryside for a couple of days so I drove back, turned up at the hotel in the morning, started the game and scored a hat-trick, so I was pleased come the evening that I had racked up a few goals on my list. We beat them 6-1 but it was not ideal preparation, four days in the countryside. I had probably eaten too much but I managed to turn it around and it is a nice memory from those early days of the cup.’
In the Ask Frank video, Lampard talks about having young players in the training bubble this week, and about Billy Gilmour and his return to action after knee surgery.‘I have been delighted with him. His attitude in rehab was what I expected but was great to see. He did everything right and got himself fit and came straight back in against Krasnodar and was fantastic, and against Manchester City, a really difficult game to come into he showed personality and quality so I am really delighted to have him ready to go.
‘Billy is going to be a huge player for this club, he is young and so, like the youth in the squad I talk about a lot, we need to give him time but at the same time his talent is huge so I am really pleased with where he is at.’
