The form
Chelsea broke the record for the longest unbeaten run in the Women’s Super League of 32 games after Wednesday night’s 4-0 victory over Aston Villa. The win moved the Blues to the top of the table with one game in hand over second-placed Manchester United.
Sam Kerr scored in the opening minutes, then Bethany England doubled our advantage 10 minutes before half-time and two quick-fire second-half goals from Pernille Harder and Magdalena Eriksson sealed a comfortable win in the Midlands.
Spurs sit seventh in league standings having won three, drawn three and lost four. There has been a turn of fortune for Rehanne Skinner’s side recently with their three wins being on the bounce. Spurs’ last game versus Everton was postponed, therefore, our opponents were last in action Sunday 17 January against West Ham. The match finished in a 1-0 triumph courtesy of a first-half strike from Lucy Quinn.
Chelsea v Tottenham recent head-to-head record
We met Spurs earlier on in the season in the group stage of the Continental League Cup and the Blues came away with the points after Erin Cuthbert and Melanie Leupolz settled a fiercely contested London derby. Finally, the breakthrough arrived with 70 minutes on the clock and it came via the right boot of Cuthbert, who took advantage of the Spurs defence sitting off her to smash home a fine opener. Then Sophie Ingle’s shot was handled inside the penalty area and Leupolz stepped up to convert from the spot.
Prior to that, the Blues hosted Spurs in last year’s Conti Cup competition and we came away with a commanding 5-1 victory. Drew Spence, Cuthbert, Deanna Cooper found the back of the net, while England registered a brace.
Chelsea opened the 2019/20 WSL season against our London neighbours at Stamford Bridge in front of a bumper crowd and we got off to a winning start thanks to England who hit spectacularly from range just minutes into the clash.
