There are four changes for today’s visit of Burnley, including a 50th Chelsea start for Mason Mount and a first appearance since September for Marcos Alonso…
Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham are the others to come into the side from the midweek draw with Wolves as Thomas Tuchel looks for his first win as Blues boss. Olivier Giroud, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell drop out.
It remains to be seen whether Abraham is joined by Werner up front in a 3-5-2 but the back three is unchanged with Thiago Silva and Toni Rudiger joining captain Cesar Azpilicueta in front of Edouard Mendy.
Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho are in midfield, with Callum Hudson-Odoi also retained in what is expected to be a wing-back role once again.
Explaining his selection, Tuchel said: ‘Marcos did not play a lot but it’s his key position, his best position. Second of all we went for him instead of Chilly because of his strength in the air. We need that for set-pieces, also defensively, and there will be many long balls to defend and many duels in the air, so for this we give Marcos a chance.’
On Hakim Ziyech's absence, he added: ‘Hakim has been in a bit of overload since five weeks so he has a bit of a risk of getting injured if he plays more than say 30 minutes. For that we decided to take a break now to go out of the risk zone. We decided this yesterday.’
Burnley make two changes from a 3-2 win against Aston Villa in midweek as former Blue Jack Cork and Matej Vydra return.
