Marcos Alonso’s stunning volley against Burnley has been shortlisted for the Premier League’s Goal of the Month award for January.
The Spaniard’s sweet strike came late on in our 2-0 victory over the Clarets at Stamford Bridge last weekend to seal the first victory under Thomas Tuchel’s management. Taking a pass from Christian Pulisic on the chest, Alonso then cushioned the ball on his knee before firing it into the top far corner.
Alonso’s effort has been nominated alongside seven others for the league’s best goal in the month of January. The other players selected are Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Kieran Tierney, Bukayo Saka (both Arsenal), Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (both Tottenham), Patrick Bamford (Leeds) and Mo Salah (Liverpool).
It was Alonso's first appearance for the Blues since September and the first time he had found the back of the net since bagging a brace against Bournemouth last February.
The last Chelsea player to win the monthly award was Eden Hazard for his unbelievable solo goal against West Ham in April 2019.
Voting is open now and closes at 6pm on Monday 8 February. The winner will be announced on Friday 12 February.
