It was Jorginho’s emphatic penalty that separated Chelsea and Tottenham on Thursday night, and afterwards the midfielder spoke about his new spot-kick technique as well as the team’s hard and humble work since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival.
You would not know Jorginho had seen two of his five Premier League penalties this season saved, such was the efficiency with which he despatched his effort in north London.
Somewhat surprisingly considering our dominance, that strike from 12 yards proved the game’s only goal, leaving the vice-captain to reflect on a super away win.
‘It feels very good,’ he said.
‘We worked hard. We knew it would be a tough game, it was a derby against a very good team. We deserved the win.
'The first half was good. We created chances and could have scored more goals. We maybe could have made better choices in the last few minutes, that’s something to improve, but we just need to keep working the way we are doing and then we will see the results.
‘I felt okay before the penalty,’ added Jorginho.
‘I have kept working on it, kept training, so I was feeling confident. I changed the technique because I felt that way could be better, and it worked. You saw the result.'
Jorginho has started each of Tuchel’s three games in charge and looked comfortable in the midfield pivot. The Italian international dictated our tempo last night in particular, and he believes the new head coach’s strategy is paying dividends.
‘The message he is giving on what he wants is clear,’ explained Jorginho.
‘We had our minds open to understand what he wanted as quick as possible because we had no time to waste.
‘When you have a group of guys that is open to new ideas, to learn, to improve, and everyone with the same target, it’s easy to work. This group was humble to accept what he was coming to give to us.
‘We need to keep being humble and never thinking it is enough. We haven’t done anything. When you feel comfortable it is a moment to drop. We need to stay calm, keep working hard and then the results are a consequence of what we are doing every day.’
