The form

The Blues’ 33-game unbeaten run in the Women’s Super League came to an end on Sunday with our 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Sam Kerr scored her 11th goal of the season at the weekend when she powerfully headed in an Erin Cuthbert corner just minutes into the contest against the Seagulls. However, the visitors pulled one back moments later from a set-piece. As expected, Chelsea dominated possession for the majority of the match but struggled to break down a well-drilled Brighton side who defended exceptionally well. With opportunities missed including Pernille Harder hitting the post and a Sophie Ingle effort being cleared off the line, it was proving not to be Chelsea’s day and things went from bad to worse when Brighton took the lead in the 78th minute.

Despite the loss, Chelsea are still in a good position in the league. We sit level on points with Manchester United but with one game in hand.

Arsenal are also coming into this game off the back of a defeat as they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City. Ellen White put Man City ahead and Arsenal equalised in the second half through Australian international Caitlin Foord, but in the final 10 minutes of the match Lauren Hemp ensured City took all three points.

Chelsea v Arsenal recent head-to-head record

We have played Arsenal twice already this season with the last result being a 1-1 draw away in the league in November.

There was little to separate the sides throughout a hard-fought 90 minutes but this London derby came to life in the latter stages of the match with both goals coming in the final five minutes. Arsenal’s Beth Mead netted from close range in the 86th minute and we responded almost instantly when Harder’s cross flicked off Lotte Wubben-Moy and into the back of the net past the Gunners goalkeeper.

The in October we met in the group stage of the Continental League Cup where we came out as 4-1 victors.

It was a good start as Magdalena Eriksson headed home a corner with just six minutes on the clock. Although the Gunners cancelled out Eriksson’s finish almost instantly when Foord rifled a shot into the far corner from range, the Blues continued with the game plan and were 3-1 with just quarter of an hour gone.

Guro Reiten netted a quick-fire brace to extend our lead when she directed her effort into the far bottom corner to register her first goal this term. Her second goal came from a rebound and the Norwegian international managed to strike her first-time effort over Manuela Zinsberger in the Gunners goal. A landmark 50th goal came for Bethany England moments before the full-time whistle blew when she got on the end of Eriksson’s clearance to coolly steer past the keeper, topping off a commanding performance from the Blues.

Last season the Blues came up against Arsenal three times and were victorious on all three occasions. Chelsea clinched the 2019/20 Continental League Cup in dramatic fashion after England netted her second of the final deep into stoppage time to ensure we ran out 2-1 winners.

The other two wins were in the WSL, beating them 2-1 at home and 4-1 away. One game in recent times which will not be forgotten was when we beat Arsenal 3-1 at Wembley Stadium to lift the 2018 FA Cup in front of more than 45,000 fans. Former Blue Ramona Bachmann scored a brace and Fran Kirby was on target that day, too.
