The latest instalment of our series looking at the upbringing of Chelsea Academy youngsters focuses today on Harvey Vale, who talks about wanting to change his name to match his idol and watching England at Wembley...

What was your first footballing memory?

When I was younger, I used to go and watch my brother play for his team. I wasn’t old enough to join so I would just have my own ball on the sideline and try to copy what he did on the pitch. I was six and it was for my local club Crowborough.

Where did your footballing journey start?

When I was much younger, I wasn’t too interested in football but we went to Australia to visit family and when I saw everyone playing on the beach, I wanted to get involved. When we got back home, all I wanted to do was play football and that's when I eventually joined my local club and started playing.

What position did you play as a youngster?

I started off as a left-back and I moved forward to left-wing but since then I’ve played almost everywhere. I did have a go in goal while I was at Fulham in a game against Watford - our keeper got injured and I got my gloves on and kept a clean sheet! I'm glad I stuck to playing outfield though.

Who were your idols?

In football it was definitely Cristiano Ronaldo. When I was younger, I begged my mum to let me change my name to Ronaldo but looking back I’m glad she didn’t let me!

I’ve always looked up to both my parents because it’s probably one of the toughest jobs. I moved out of home when I was 13 and I know that was tough for them, I admire them so much.

What’s your earliest memory of watching football?

I went to watch England against Kazakhstan at Wembley in 2008 with my family and that's the first time I remember watching a game live. England won 5-1 and Wayne Rooney scored two. I just remember there being a good atmosphere in the stadium for the whole game. I also remember the 2010 World Cup in South Africa quite well and enjoyed watching that whole tournament.

-Vale started last time out for our development squad, who return to action on Friday night against Liverpool in a PL2 game you can watch live on this website and the 5th Stand app. Kick-off from Kingsmeadow is at 7pm.
