The form

Chelsea qualified for the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday following a 3-1 aggregate win against Atletico Madrid. The Blues went into the away leg which was hosted in Monza, Italy – due to travel restrictions to Spain – with a 2-0 advantage.

Atletico Madrid had the opportunity to go ahead in the game with quarter of an hour left of play when a penalty was awarded after Niamh Charles blocked a shot with her hands. England international Toni Duggan rattled the crossbar with her effort, to keep it even. However, Mjelde, who converted from the spot in the first leg, stepped up minutes later as the referee pointed to the spot at the other end due to another handball. The Norwegian international blasted her penalty beyond Hedvig Lindahl to extend our advantage.

The Spanish side netted a consolation goal in added time but Chelsea progressed to the next round and will meet Wolfsburg in the final-eight.

Chelsea, who are top of the Women’s Super League, were in domestic action last Sunday against West Ham and the Blues picked up all three points after beating the east London team 2-0. Sam Kerr opened the scoring after seven minutes when she met Bethany England’s delightful cross with her head, Then, in the second half, Kerr returned the favour and by delivering a perfectly timed ball for the No.9 to head past the Hammers’ goalkeeper.

Bristol City currently sit second from bottom in league standings having lost 10, drawn three and won two. However, they recorded their second win of the season on Sunday to move off the foot of the WSL. The Robins ended Reading’s five-game unbeaten streak at Ashton Gate by coming out as 3-2 victors. Goals from Charlie Wellings, Jemma Purfield and the matchwinner from Ebony Salmon gave Bristol the points.

Chelsea v Bristol City recent head-to-head record

The Blues have been triumphant in 12 of our past 13 league matches against Bristol, scoring 54 goals. We have played them in the Women’s Super League twice this term with the home game ending in a 9-0 victory and the away fixture resulting in a 5-0 win.

It will be exactly a month tomorrow since we last met the Robins at their patch. All of our forwards contributed with goals in what was a professional performance despite heavy downpour in the West Country. Fran Kirby opened the scoring early on with a clinical headed effort at the front post. Pernille Harder doubled our advantage with a fierce strike from range and our No.14 got her second by half-time when she poked home.

Sam Kerr netted her 11th goal of the Women’s Super League campaign with a powerful header and Bethany England, who assisted her Australian team-mate, got on the scoresheet herself as she slid her effort beyond the ‘keeper at the far post.

The other WSL match this season was our first home game of 2020/21 and league history was made as nine different goalscorers were on the scoresheet, which is the highest number in a single match.

Kirby once again got us underway inside the first quarter of an hour, Mjelde doubled our lead from the spot and Melanie Leupolz notched her first goal for the club with a diving header. By the break, the Blues had a five-goal cushion as Erin Cuthbert and Millie Bright got on the scoresheet. Cuthbert struck from range and Bright headed home a free-kick on the stroke of half-time.England scored her first goal of 2020/21 when she turned home a rebound and then substitutes Niamh Charles and Harder finished smartly to join Leupolz in scoring their maiden goals for the Blues. Kerr completed the scoring when she confidently placed her shot beyond the keeper.

The match before that came in January 2020 when we beat them 6-1 at Kingsmeadow. England and Ji So-Yun netted a brace while Hannah Blundell and Jess Carter also found their names on the scoresheet. The away match of last season ended in a 4-0 win. Reiten got a brace, Ji scored and Ingle netted her first-ever Chelsea goal.

The Blues have good memories away to Bristol as we clinched our second Women’s Super League title in the 2017/18 season with a comfortable 2-0 win over the Robins.

Next up for the Blues

Next Chelsea travel to the Merseyside to take on Everton in the Women’s Super League. The game is at Walton Hall Park on Wednesday 17 March and lick-off is at 7pm.
