Christian Pulisic was the pick of the Chelsea players in yesterday’s win over Sheffield United, and although the American was unfortunate not to find the net he could still reflect on another successful Stamford Bridge outing.

Once in the first half and twice after the interval Pulisic came close to scoring. It was his own individual genius that created the second and third of those chances, a flap-flap between two bewildered Blades opening up space where it seemed there was none.

Sheffield United came into the quarter-final tie in the last half-hour and on another day might have equalised, but the Blues held on to progress.

‘They were difficult to break down,’ reckoned Pulisic.

‘They are a good defensive side. We had a couple of chances where we could have done a bit better, myself included, but we got our two goals and it was a good result.

‘They didn’t make it easy on us. We knew they have quality and we had to suffer a bit in the second half, but in the end it was a clean sheet and a good performance.

‘It was a bit uncomfortable at times and we knew it would be. There was always going to be a bit of pressure and we had to defend and be strong as a team. We did that so in the end I was happy.’

It is now 14 games unbeaten since Thomas Tuchel arrived at Stamford Bridge. In that time we have risen to fourth in the Premier League table, reached the last eight of the Champions League and now have an FA Cup semi-final meeting with Manchester City to look forward to.

‘We definitely have a confident bunch of guys,’ said Pulisic.

‘When you go on a streak like this you feel really good. We feel like we can beat anyone so it’s a good feeling right now.’
