In the latest instalment of our series where we take a look at the upbringing of our scholars, today we focus on recent Under-18s goalscorer Edwin Andersson, who recalls playing in Sweden and the differences in football since coming to England...
First memory of playing football?
It would probably be when my dad took me to a local summer camp. I was there for a couple of days and I was the youngest boy there. I had to join in with players that were two years older than me – I really enjoyed it and that’s the first time I remember playing football.
Where did your footballing journey start?
I had two local teams where I lived but you had to be eight years old to start training - luckily I was able to join in when I was six! I started training twice a week and that was where the journey began. I got to play for the team I have supported from young in Sweden. I joined when I was 10 years old and really enjoyed it.
What have been the differences between football in Sweden and England?
There’s a difference in playing style because the game moves much quicker here. I think it’s also a little bit more physical in England, something which I’m working on.
Did you play in any other positions?
When I was a youngster, I played everywhere – in goal and in defence. But since I have been playing 11-vs-11, I've always been a winger. It’s my most enjoyable role.
Who were your idols?
There is only one and that’s Cristiano Ronaldo, always! He’s the player I have tried to learn from. I have always copied his skills from when I was a young kid.
What’s your first memory of watching football?
Me and my dad went to watch the club I last played for in Sweden, IFK Gotthenburg. It is also the team we support. That was my first time watching football live and I enjoyed it.
Which one memory from your career so far has been your favourite?
It would have to be making my international debut for Sweden’s Under-17s, and signing for Chelsea of course. It was special to play for Sweden and putting on the shirt was a big moment for me. We played against Finland but we lost unfortunately.
Our Under-18s are back in action on Friday in the FA Youth Cup fourth round. Kick-off is 12.30pm and the game against AFC Fylde can be watched live on this website and the 5th Stand app.
