The form
The Blues return to Budapest fresh from our win at Kingsmeadow on Sunday where we put two goals past Aston Villa to take the three points and maintain the top spot in the league.
Chelsea dominated proceedings on our home turf where once more, Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby took centre stage with Kirby picking out Kerr in the box with a pinpoint cross which Kerr headed into the top corner to give Chelsea the lead in the 24th minute.Emma Hayes’ team had to wait until the 57th minute for the second and final goal of the afternoon with Kirby once again providing the assist for Kerr to secure the three-point win.
Wolfsburg were also in action on Saturday with a 3-1 away win against SC Sand, remaining hot on the heels of Bundesliga league leaders Bayern Munich with only five points now separating them. Goals came from Rebecka Blonqvist, Karina Saevik and Pia-Sophie Wolter with Chiara Loos getting a goal back for SC Sand. The She-Wolves have won 15 of their 17 league games this season, drawing one and only succumbing to Bayern Munich.
Chelsea v Wolfsburg head-to-head record
The Blues returned victorious from Budapest last Wednesday after a heart-stopping 2-1 win against Wolfsburg in the first leg tie of the Champions League quarter-final, the first ever victory over the German side.
Prior to this year, Chelsea had been knocked out of the European competition by last year’s finalists on three previous occasions.
We drew Wolfsburg at the round of 16 in the 2015/16 season and lost 4-1 on aggregate, then a year later we met at the round of 32 and were defeated by the same score line. Our most recent encounter prior to last week came in our 2017/18 campaign when we lost 5-1 in the semi-finals.
Chelsea hold the advantage going into the second leg tomorrow which will no doubt offer another showcase for the fans.
Next up for the Blues
Up next after Wolfsburg, the Blues will return to Kingsmeadow to host Birmingham City Women. The match takes place on Sunday 4 April and has a 12:30pm (UK) kick-off.
