The form
Last Sunday, the Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat away to against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the semi-final tie.
Chelsea were dealt an early blow in the match when Sydney Lohmann headed the hosts into an early lead at the FC Bayern Campus. The Blues responded well and just 10 minutes later, Guro Reiten’s free-kick rebounded off Melanie Leupolz to give us a crucial away goal. Chelsea threatened as the first half went on but there was nothing to separate the two sides going into half-time.
Bayern Munich regained the lead just before the hour mark when Hannah Glas scored from 25 yards to give Bayern the 2-1 advantage. Ji So-Yun came agonisingly close to a second equaliser when she hit the crossbar, as did two Bethany England headers. Despite the defeat, Chelsea secured a vital away goal and have had a week to prepare for the second leg.
Chelsea Women V Bayern Munich recent head-to-head record
Prior to Sunday’s first leg, the Blues have faced Bayern Munich twice in the Champions League previously with the last meeting ending 2-1 to Bayern back in 2017, which was the second leg of the tie. The first leg went to Chelsea Women with a 1-0 win at home.
Bayern are yet to lift the Champions League trophy, previously reaching the semi-final against Barcelona two years ago which ended in a 1-0 defeat. Their 2020/21 run has delivered them wins against Ajax, BIIK-Kazygurt and most recently Rosengard.
Chelsea have faced Benfica, Atletico Madrid and Wolfsburg to secure our place in this year’s semi-final.
Next up for the Blues
The next stop for Chelsea Women will be against Spurs away at The Hive stadium on Wednesday 5 May with a 5.30pm (UK) kick-off.
