Emma Hayes believes concentration will be key in Chelsea FC Women’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich on Sunday.
The Blues go into the return leg at Kingsmeadow trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Germany but hold a vital away goal thanks to former Bayern Munich captain Melanie Leupolz.
Chelsea are aiming to reach the Champions League final for the first time in the club’s history and Hayes says her side must tighten up defensively.
Speaking in a press conference, Hayes said: ‘We’ve been solid all season and there is a reason we are in the position we are in because of how well we’ve done.
‘When you play the top opponents, you can’t switch off for a single instance. Whether it be a throw-in, a corner, a quick re-start. It’s the mindfulness, you go playing at Manchester City and then you play away at Bayern Munich, you can’t underestimate the challenges for the mind for the players.
‘You’ve got to be conscious of how switched on you’ve got to be and that’s what my message will be to the team. Don’t relent, stay switched on to the task and we are going to take the game to Bayern Munich.
‘We are at home, we like playing at Kingsmeadow and we’ve got to trust in the beliefs that we are in the position because we deserve to be here.
‘If you want to go to the next level, you have to produce something you didn’t produce before. It has to be better than it was and that’s what I have to look at from last weekend. I want an inspired performance from the team but I’m accustomed to getting that, so I trust them.’
While Hayes highlighted the importance of a strong defensive performance, the Blues boss has an attacking target as well for Chelsea to progress to the final.
‘If we are going to progress, we are probably going to have to score more than one goal,' she said.
‘We have to focus on what we’ve done so well this season in going forward and eliminate the errors because ultimately both of their goals came from poor defensive mistakes from us.
‘It got transitional towards the end but that’s because we were pushing for an equaliser. I trust the group, I trust what we know, and I want them to deliver the performance that I know we are capable of.’
Sunday’s second leg clash with Bayern Munich kicks-off at 12.30pm (UK time) and is available to watch live on BT Sport.
