Ann-Katrin Berger and Sam Kerr capped off fine seasons by scooping the Barclay’s FA Women’s Super League Golden Glove and Golden Boots awards.
Berger picked up the Golden Glove award after keeping 12 clean sheets and with Chelsea finishing the season two points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, the goalkeeper’s save to deny Lauren Hemp a late winner in our top-of-the-table clash in April has proved to be a season-defining moment. While Berger has been doing the business at one end, Kerr has been just as impressive in front of goal for the Blues. The Australian has shone for Chelsea this year and beat off competition from Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema to finish top of the scoring charts with 21 WSL goals.
Upon receiving her award, Kerr said: ‘I’m really proud of this one to be honest. I feel I’ve had to work hard for it and prove a lot of people wrong, so I’ll enjoy this one for sure!
‘I feel really lucky to be part of this team and to score as many goals as I have. The way we played today, every time we do something, I’m like ‘wow, I feel so lucky to be a part of this team’.
‘It’s unbelievable and to look to the side of me and see Fran Kirby, Erin, Guro, Pernille. It’s crazy and it blows my mind every day. I feel so lucky to be here.’
While Kerr showed appreciation for those who have supplied the striker with countless opportunities in front of goal, Berger says winning the Golden Glove is reward for the defensive efforts of the whole team. She said: ‘It’s been a good season but the whole team have had a good season. Sometimes it’s nice to get the gratitude as a goalkeeper but the goalkeeper wouldn’t be here without their defenders.‘We have been really consistent throughout the season. Sometimes you have ups and downs but that put the team even closer and we showed that.
‘It’s still hard work. Maybe it looks really easy, but there is a lot of effort and a lot of work behind that. We never take it for granted and I think that’s the real medicine to win all these titles.’
