The Italian was coolness personified from the spot midway through the second half, confidently dispatching his penalty to score our second in our 2-1 victory over Leicester at Stamford Bridge.

The victory ensured we overtook the Foxes into third place and now means our task is simple: beat Aston Villa on Sunday and a top-four finish is secured.

‘It was a massive three points,’ said Jorginho after the game. ‘A great win and I think we deserved this because we showed the intensity that we wanted to.

‘We created a lot of chances, could have scored a few more goals and it’s just a huge three points for us as we try and finish in the top four, ahead of another big game coming up.

‘We were still hurting from Saturday [FA Cup final defeat] a little bit, of course. When you reach a cup final, you want to win.

‘We were all disappointed that we couldn’t lift the trophy but you have to put these feelings to one side and concentrate on the next game. We showed that with our performance which was really strong from the first minute.’

Jorginho’s goal, which came after Toni Rudiger had broken the deadlock at Stamford Bridge, means he is now our top scorer for the season with seven goals.

While delighted to be helping out in both boxes, our midfielder was just pleased to play his part at securing all three points and paid tribute to the impact that the 8,000 Chelsea fans inside Stamford Bridge had on proceedings.

‘I was so happy to score and I’m really pleased to be top goalscorer,’ said the Italian international.

‘It was such an important goal for the team, we are a strong group and I’m just so glad that we could get the three points. I was really focused when taking the penalty and I’m very happy to have scored for my team.

‘Of course, it was amazing to have the fans back and this is what football is all about. You could really sense the atmosphere and the passion from the Chelsea fans and having them back is really good.

‘It’s a big game on Sunday now, and it won’t be easy against Aston Villa but we know what we have to do to achieve our goals.

‘We know how important this game is going to be and we will work really hard from now until then to prepare right for the match. We need to be in the top four and to get into the Champions League for next season.’
