In the build-up to this weekend’s action, Thomas Tuchel has been asked about two England captains, a former one and a current one, with Chelsea about to face Aston Villa where John Terry is now a coach, and with media speculation rife about the future of Harry Kane.
Sunday’s game could be the first chance the Blues head coach has to speak with our legendary former captain Terry and with that a possibility, Tuchel described his perception of the part the current Villa assistant played in the Chelsea story.‘The same as for Frank Lampard,’ Tuchel responded when asked. ‘I cannot have bigger respect for these two guys. With Petr Cech and Didier Drogba, they are guys that come instantly to my mind when I think about and thought about Chelsea Football Club. That is absolutely clear.‘We have not had a chance to meet in person. I think when we were training in Portugal when we were preparing for the Champions League last-eight, he tried to visit our training,’ Tuchel recalls, remembering back to a previous club and season. ‘That did not happen but I was very happy to have the possibility to see him and to talk to them.‘So it's the first time tomorrow. I'm not so sure if this is the right occasion to have a nice and relaxed talk. Before the match, maybe not. And after the match, that depends on his mood or my mood. Let's see.‘But they are the guys people talk about here and the guys who build a certain image for Chelsea and who created a certain type of image that represents this club. I have nothing but respect for John Terry.
‘Everybody loves a John Terry in their team, everybody loves a Frank Lampard. This is a no-brainer. These are the type of guys who make the difference for sure.’When asked if he is interested in signing Tottenham striker and England captain Harry Kane, Tuchel has a similar view on every team wishing to have players of a certain profile but has a clear response.‘If you find any coach around the world who will not like to have a Harry Kane in his team, call me,’ he says. ‘I would like to speak with the guy [that coach] and hear about his ideas of scoring and attacking.‘Of course everybody loves Harry Kane but let's be very, very clear. He's a player for Tottenham with a long-term contract, and we will not get involved in any press conference with any disrespectful comments about it.’Instead Tuchel is prepared to talk more about his squad and their goalscoring this season, with Jorginho our top Premier League scorer on seven goals, all of them from the penalty spot.‘We don’t want Jorginho as our top scorer, not because we don't like Jorghi to have all the fame, he can have all the fame and all the praise, there's no problem with that, he’s a super nice guy, but of course we don't want him to be our top scorer.
‘But turn it around. What if we let Timo take all the penalties, he could have seven more goals and then we have a whole different discussion with exactly the same performance. A lot of top scorers in Europe use penalties to improve their numbers. That is not with Timo, he is not that type of player.‘In general, we try to improve our statistics offensively. And first of all, we do this with the guys who are here.’
