Mason Mount, Reece James and Ben Chilwell are the three Chelsea players chosen by Gareth Southgate in his provisional 33-man squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Southgate will trim that group down to a maximum of 26 players on 1 June following the Champions League and Europa League finals, in which a number of England internationals are set to feature.

James made his England debut in October last year and has earned six caps. Mount has scored four goals in his 16 appearances so far having debuted in September 2019.

When asked about the current inclusion of four right-backs - James, Kyle Walker, Kieran Tripper and Trent Alexander-Arnold - Southgate had this to say.

'You're looking at four right-backs, I just see four good footballers.

'Kieran Trippier can play at left-back. Alexander-Arnold can play at wing-back, I think he can play midfield. I've seen Reece James play on the right side of a back three, at wing-back and as a midfielder. Those flexible players who can fulfil different roles will be hugely important.'

Should the Chelsea Academy duo make Southgate’s final cut, it will be their first taste of senior international tournament football. Chilwell was a member of the England squad that came third in the inaugural UEFA Nations League, and has picked up three caps since joining the Blues.

England were shocked by Iceland at the last Euros in France five years ago, but responded well at the 2018 World Cup where they reached the semi-finals.

The Three Lions have never won the European Championships and have something of a home advantage this year, with their three group games, against Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic, being played at Wembley. Should they win the group, their round of 16 game will be at Wembley, with both semi-finals and the final also taking place at the national stadium in London.

England open their group stage campaign against Mateo Kovacic’s Croatia on Monday 14 June.
