The Frenchman, currently with his national side ahead of the upcoming European Championships, is one of the rumoured frontrunners for the award which is viewed globally as the biggest individual prize in football.

Kante was asked about his chances of landing the gong at a press conference held ahead of France’s final warm-up game against Bulgaria tomorrow and although it’s something he would be delighted to win, the midfielder has said it is not something he is particularly focusing on and feels it is an award that is the result of strong ‘team’ performances.

‘A few years ago I was in the top 10,’ said Kante of the Ballon d’Or. ‘It was the first time and it was nice, but winning it is another story.

‘It's a great individual reward. I see it as the result of a good season for the players and their team-mates. It's not a goal I'm working on. Those who won it in the past are players who have achieved great things during their career.

‘I think it's a bit early to talk about it now. We are in the middle of the year, there are still six months left and lots of matches and competitions to play. It’s not necessary to say today that I deserve it.’

The midfielder was also asked about his long-term future at the press conference. He was quick to confirm he hopes to expand on his successful Chelsea career to date, with the Champions League triumph whetting his appetite for more silverware in the two years he has remaining on his contract at present.

‘I've been at Chelsea for five years,’ Kante explained. ‘I have had many good years there and hope to have many more.

‘The Champions League is the climax of five years spent at the club. My future is not something I consider. I have two years of contract left and I feel very good here.’
