Our review of the season just completed continues with a focus on the triumphant Champions League campaign…
In total, the Blues played 13 matches in the competition, six of which were in the group stage and seven in the knockout round.
Two of our away ties, in the last-16 against Atletico Madrid and the quarter-final versus Porto, were played on neutral territory due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, as was the reverse fixture against Porto.
That became the first ‘home’ game to be played away from Stamford Bridge in the club’s history.
Our top appearance-makers in the competition are set out below:
In terms of starts, Jorginho and Edouard Mendy lined up in all but one of our 13 matches, the Italian missing our home leg against Atletico and Kepa Arrizabalaga playing instead of Mendy for the group-stage draw with Krasnodar.
The Spaniard made one save in that game, with his fellow goalkeeper accounting for the remainder of our 32 saves in the competition. Mendy’s Champions League campaign featured some eye-catching statistics, the most notable being his nine clean sheets in 12 games. No goalkeeper has ever kept more in a single Champions League season.
Furthermore, only AC Milan have won the Champions League (since its rebrand from the European Cup in 1992/93) conceding fewer than our four goals.
Across our 13 Champions League games, we were trailing for a grand total of just five minutes and 23 seconds.
In total, 11 Chelsea players found the back of the net in the Champions League this season. Kai Havertz’s first and only goal will remain an iconic one in the club’s history, his shimmy past Ederson proving the winner in the Porto final against Manchester City.
The German was one of five Blues to finish with a solitary goal alongside Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell, Emerson Palmieri and Jorginho. Our other Champions League scorers in 2020/21 were:
Giroud’s four-goal haul against Seville in the group stage accounted for two-thirds of the Frenchman’s goals on a night he became the oldest player to score a hat-trick (34 years, 63 days) in the competition since Ferenc Puskas for Real Madrid in 1965.
Werner accounted for four of our 23 Champions League goals in 2020/21, three of which were converted penalties. The striker also had more shots on target (14) than any of his Chelsea team-mates.
