There was plenty of drama in the final set of group games before the knockout round begins, with N’Golo Kante also in action for France against Portugal in another entertaining Group F contest. Yet it was in Munich where three Chelsea players featured for a German team that needed points to progress, Toni Rudiger starting in a back three and Havertz keeping his place up top.

The hosts conceded a shock opener after just 11 minutes when Adam Szalai stooped to head past Manuel Neuer and it was a frustrating first period for Joachim Low’s side, who trailed at the break.

After toiling and testing a resolute Hungarian defence, Havertz finally came to his country’s rescue with a quarter of the contest remaining. Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi failed to deal with a ball into the box and our Champions League matchwinner was on hand to nod the ball over the line from a couple of yards out for his 13th goal of the season for club and country.

Timo Werner replaced Havertz in the immediate aftermath of the 22-year-old drawing Germany level but remarkably they were behind again almost directly from the restart as Andras Schafer escaped in behind to nod the Hungarians back in front.

With 22 minutes to prevent a second successive tournament exit at the group stage, Die Mannschaft poured forward in search of a second equaliser. It was hardly a siege but they did eventually get what they needed when Werner’s blocked shot fell nicely for Leon Goretzka and the Bayern man rifled his finish into the bottom corner.

The draw left Germany on four points and proved enough to seal a runners-up spot, meaning they will travel to London for a mouth-watering meeting with England next Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Budapest, Kante lined up alongside Paul Pogba once again in the France midfield as Didier Deschamps went looking for three points against the reigning European champions Portugal.

A topsy-turvy game that featured three penalties eventually ended 2-2, with Les Bleus claiming top spot and a clash with Switzerland in the last-16.

Cristiano Ronaldo confidently dispatched both his spot-kicks, levelling the all-time record for international goals with 109 in the process, either side of a brace from Karim Benzema. The first of those for the Real Madrid striker was also a penalty, awarded as the most controversial of the three as Wolves defender Nelson Semedo was harshly penalised after coming together with Kylian Mbappe.

Kante busied himself throughout in midfield, recording more interceptions, tackles and clearances combined than anybody else on the pitch. His club team-mates Kurt Zouma and Olivier Giroud were unused substitutes.

Euro 2020 now takes a two-day break before the last-16 begins on Saturday, with a Chelsea interest in all but two of those ties.
