The Blues reached the FA Cup final for the fourth time in five seasons and 15th time overall, although on this occasion we fell at that last hurdle, defeated 1-0 by Leicester City. The Carabao Cup yielded a shorter campaign, albeit one ended by a penalty shoot-out.

FA Cup

In the FA Cup, there were six games from the third-round stage to the final, with Morecambe, Luton, Barnsley (in the only away tie) and Sheffield United defeated, before the semi-final at Wembley against Manchester City and the meeting with Leicester in the same stadium.

Two players appeared in every FA Cup game but only one started them all. In total 24 players contributed to the cup run.

The Blues netted a total of 11 goals in the six FA Cup outings.

Our top scorer in the competition was Tammy Abraham with four goals. Three of those came in one game - in the 3-1 fourth-round win over Luton. It was one of three hat-tricks scored by Chelsea in all competitions during the course of the season. His other was the winner at Barnsley in the next round.

Against Luton Town in the FA Cup, Mason Mount at 22 years and 14 days became our youngest captain since John Terry who captained for the first time two days before his 21st birthday. Mount was also skipper in the competition against Sheffield United.

A seven-game run of clean sheets in all competitions that equalled the club record was achieved in that Sheffield United game when it ended 2-0.

When we played Barnsley in the fifth round in February, it was the 12th occasion we had played a team in both FA Cup and League Cup in the same season.

Carabao Cup

The much shorter run in the earlier-starting domestic competition amounted to two games - a 6-0 home demolition of Barnsley, whom we played away in the FA Cup as well, and then a trip to Tottenham where the contest was poised at 1-1 after extra-time, with Spurs going through 5-4 on penalties.

Five players started both of those matches - Cesar Azpilicueta, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori.

The goalscoring list in that competition is dominated by Kai Havertz's hat-trick in the Barnsley game - another of the season's treble of three-goal hauls. Tammy Abraham, Ross Barkley, Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner, who scored his first Chelsea goal in the tie at Tottenham with a bottom-corner finish from the edge of the area, weighed in with one a piece.

The penalty shoot-out that decided that game in north London was our only one of the season. Four Chelsea spot-kicks were converted by Abraham, Azpilicueta, Emerson and Jorginho with Mount the unfortunate player not to score his. Spurs slotted five past Edouard Mendy.
