The 20-year-old midfielder has shown himself to be one of the most promising young players in British football over the past two seasons and will now continue his development by gaining more first-team experience in the top flight with newly promoted Norwich.

Gilmour joined the Chelsea Academy from Rangers in the summer of 2017 and has made 22 senior appearances for the Blues since his debut as a substitute in a 2-2 league draw with Sheffield United in August 2019.

He signed his first professional contract with Chelsea in 2018, after contributing to an unprecedented year of success for our Academy, playing regularly as our Under-18s completed a clean sweep of silverware and scoring in the FA Youth Cup final.

Gilmour became a full-time member of our men’s first-team squad halfway through the 2019/20 season, having followed up that substitute appearance against Sheffield United with his full senior debut in a 7-1 thrashing of Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup.

His breakthrough moment at this level came in March last year, when he received back-to-back Man of the Match awards for his performances in wins over Liverpool in the FA Cup and Everton in the Premier League, despite those games being his first starts in those competitions. Unfortunately, football was then suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic and, when it returned, an injury suffered in the 3-2 win at Crystal Palace brought his campaign to an early end.

He returned to action at the end of last year and managed to match his tally of 11 first-team appearances from the previous campaign, despite missing almost half the season through injury, and was among our substitutes for the FA Cup and Champions League finals.

Gilmour also made his senior international debut for Scotland in a pre-Euro 2020 friendly with the Netherlands, before being named Star of the Match by UEFA on his first competitive start in their draw with England at the tournament itself, although he was ruled out of their final group game following a positive Covid-19 test.

He will now continue to gain first-team experience in 2021/22 with Norwich under the management of Daniel Farke, who was in charge of Borussia Dortmund’s reserves during Thomas Tuchel’s time as the club’s first-team boss. The Canaries return to the Premier League this season following a one-year absence, having finished top of the Championship table last term.
