The first of this weekend’s major international finals took place in Rio de Janeiro last night, with Thiago Silva’s Brazil side defeated by Argentina 1-0 in the Copa America final.
Angel Di Maria netted the only goal of the game in a close encounter played out by two old rivals in South America, with the PSG winger superbly lobbing Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson in the 22nd minute to ensure Lionel Messi lifted his first major piece of silverware with his national side.
Chelsea defender Thiago Silva played the entire game at the Maracana Stadium and looked composed and assured in defence but ultimately the Brazilian side couldn’t find a way back into the game and were left disappointed as Argentina held on to win the Copa America.
Before the game, the Brazil captain was presented with the Copa America fair play award which his nation had won.
Thiago will now enjoy some time off before reporting to Cobham for pre-season ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
