Chelsea’s Italian duo of Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri were the ones celebrating at Wembley, as Italy defeated England on penalties to lift Euro 2020.

In a game that was finely poised throughout, it was the composure and steel of the Italians that proved victorious as they came from behind to win the game 4-2 in the penalty shootout.

It means the Chelsea pair join a special group to have lifted both the Champions League and the European Championship in the same season.

Jorginho and Emerson both played the entire game for Roberto Mancini’s Italy side, while Mason Mount started for England before he was withdrawn during extra time. Reece James was an unused substitute for the Three Lions, while Ben Chilwell was left out of the matchday squad.

England, roared on by a vociferous Wembley crowd, made the perfect start to this Euro 2020 final by taking the lead through Luke Shaw inside two minutes.

The Manchester United left-back stole in at the back post and smashed the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma for his first ever England goal, and the quickest goal ever recorded in a European Championship final.

The Three Lions dominated for the remainder of the first half, with Mount at the heart of England’s attacks and linking up well in attack with Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.

However, it was the Italians who were in control after the break and they deservedly drew level when Leonardo Bonucci scrambled the ball home from a corner after 67 minutes.

It was Mancini’s side that looked the more likely to find a winner in normal time, but in truth extra time seemed inevitable. That was the way things played out, with another 30 minutes required to try and separate the sides.

Mount was replaced by Jack Grealish nine minutes into extra time, with the Wembley crowd offering warm applause for the Chelsea midfielder’s contribution.

The same couldn’t be said for Jorginho, however, with boos ringing out from the supporters after he caught Grealish late moments later. A yellow card was brandished by the referee on this occasion.

A dangerous ball whipped in by Emerson caused panic in the England box, with a strong right hand from Jordan Pickford clearing the danger on that occasion. The Chelsea left-back, who performed admirably throughout, was replaced with just a few minutes remaining of extra time by Alessandro Florenzi.

And so it would be penalties required to separate these two incredible sides. After Andrea Belotti saw his spot kick saved by Pickford, it was advantage England.

However missed penalties from Rashford and Sancho gave Jorginho the chance to win it for Italy, but he was also denied by Pickford who made a superb stop from the Chelsea man.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough as Bukayo Sako was denied by Donnarumma as Italy won Euro 2020.
